Supporting communities around our renewable energy assets

Case study

Supporting the local communities and environments near our energy sites is in line with our ethos of being a sustainable investor. We align ourselves closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Wherever possible, we hire local experts to perform the operations and maintenance across our renewable energy asset portfolio, which supports the growth in skilled job opportunities in communities local to our assets. In addition, it reduces the environmental impact of vehicle mileage required for operations and maintenance, a potentially significant factor for our assets located in remote areas of Sweden.

In order to provide another level of community support, we actively engage in initiatives that enhance the health and wellbeing of the populations around our renewable energy sites.

Gabrielsberget wind farm – Sweden

The Gabrielsberget Wind Farm is located in northeast Sweden with an installed capacity of 46MW and is estimated to power the equivalent of 37,000 UK homes annually. The asset has previously made community benefit payments to build facilities such as an outdoor gym, public barbeque areas, playgrounds, track maintenance of ski touring runs and for the upkeep of the hockey rink at the local school.

What’s next?

Across our portfolio, we continue to contribute towards initiatives which support the wellbeing of the communities. For example, Downing’s Renewables & Infrastructure Trust (DORE) donated £30,000 towards repairing a local gym’s roof, close to DORE’s Bourne Park Solar Farm. While Bourne Park and Gabrielsberget wind farm are only two examples of initiatives we are working on, we endeavour to install further measures to help communities that share our land.

Torsten Mack, Investment Director at Downing, said:

"We are proud to support this exceptional management team, whose strong track record positions them well to build a new business in dementia care. This needs-based sector is underpinned by a lack of quality supply and we are investing in Fortava Healthcare to set and deliver high standards, and to help make a difference."

Johann van Zyl, CEO at Fortava, added:

"I’m thrilled to be working with Jamie, as we share the same values. We plan to grow Fortava into a leading provider of dementia care over the next five to seven years. But growth isn’t our primary focus—our goal is to deliver outstanding care and foster a joyful, supportive environment for both residents and staff. We’re delighted to be partnering with Downing who also share our values and we look forward to this journey with them."

Jamie Stuart, CFO at Fortava, commented:

“For me, it's about being more than just another care home provider. While dementia care in the UK is generally of a good standard, we want to set ourselves apart with a fresh approach. That’s why, after over 25 years in banking, I chose to partner with Johann and Downing on this venture.”
